Had there never been a McCoy Tyner, there’s no telling what would have happened to modern jazz piano. NEA Jazz Master Tyner’s seminal contributions cannot be overstated. This appearance matches him with some of the next generation’s finest players. Ably inhabiting the cutting edge since 1990’s outings with Dave Holland, Bill Stewart, Jack DeJohnette and John Scofield, tenor/soprano saxophonist Chris Potter provides the melodic frontline. Deep, soulful lyrics, chanting and spoken word are perhaps the evening’s most intriguing ingredient and come compliments of vocal phenom Jose James.
