Grammy-winner Mads Tolling gained international acclaim as a member of the Turtle Island String Quartet. The violinist, who cites influences as varied as Pat Metheny, Frank Zappa and Bob Dylan, eschews pyrotechnic displays, working instead from a hauntingly harmonic slow-burn. Nevertheless, Tolling’s virtuosity has landed him stage time with some of the heaviest names in jazz, including Paquito D’Rivera, Joe Lovano and Stefon Harris. This tribute to mentor and kindred spirit Jean-Luc Ponty features fresh takes on the master violinist’s legacy, from Mahavishnu and Zappa to seminal recordings like Enigmatic Ocean and Imaginary Voyage.
