Mandolin extraordinaire David Grisman and consummate guitarist Frank Vignola have been friends and musical collaborators for years, though their busy schedules make this concert pairing a rare treat. After having released an album of standards titled Frank ‘n Dawg (2010), they’ve continued exploring the finer points of the Great American Songbook. With that template in play, this concert will showcase two of the world’s great instrumentalists, enjoying each other’s spontaneity in the company of great jazz and swing classics.

David Grisman has long been one of the brightest stars of bluegrass and acoustic music.  From his East Coast beginnings in jug bands to his work with rock luminary Jerry Garcia, Grisman has infused gypsy jazz stylings with a psychedelic sensibility that has been able to cross genres and audiences many times over.  A poster-child for the ‘New Grass Revival,’ Grisman has been continually committed to musical growth, keeping both himself on his game and his audience on their toes.

New Yorker Frank Vignola is one of the most gifted guitarists performing today. His stunning virtuosity has made him the guitarist of choice for many of the world’s top musicians, ranging all the way from Madonna to Wynton Marsalis.  Les Paul appointed Vignola to his “Five Most Admired Guitarists List” for the Wall Street Journal, and his jaw-dropping technique explains why the New York Times deemed him “one of the brightest…stars of the guitar.”

With their skill and imaginations allowing for seemingly endless musical ideas, seeing Grisman and Vignola together is witnessing pure, inspired collaboration.  The combination of the 14 strings of their guitar and mandolin is like a folk version of a chamber string quartet.  From bluegrass to jazz, to folk and swing, good music is good music to these two and they’re not afraid to tackle new styles, knowing that they have each other’s backs and their strings to do the talking.
