Summer Jazz Camp
(SANTA CRUZ, CA) – Registration is underway for Kuumbwa’s Annual Summer Jazz Camp, June 18 – 28 at Cabrillo College. Camp is open to students entering grades 8-12 in the fall. Students must know at least 3 major scales and have experience with their instrument. Drummers must know standard jazz rhythms. Students will meet new friends while learning performing, basic improvisation & theory, concepts & phrasing and history & appreciation. Students receive both one to one and group instruction. A vocal jazz ensemble will be offered for grades 10-12 only, with referral from vocal instructor. (ensemble contingent upon enrollment).
Directed by Santa Cruz County music educators Steve Wilson and Terrel Eaton, the camp’s grand finale concert performance begins at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, June 28 on the famous Kuumbwa Jazz Center stage.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to attend Sound Check clinic with Christian McBride Trio. This is sure to be an entertaining and informative way to kick off our summer jazz camp and is free for all 2012 Kuumbwa campers! The band will give the inside scoop on playing on stage, making music with friends and keeping it real all the time. Not only will this be a fun and exciting way to kick off our camp, but is sure to inspire young musicians to find and hold on to their love of music.
Grammy winner Christian McBride, has been one of the most important and omnipresent figures in the jazz world for some 20 years. A Julliard trained, virtuoso bassist, McBride is also a composer, arranger, educator, curator and administrator who has appeared in numerous musical settings with just about every musician and musical style imaginable.
Camp Tuition: $250 – Registration is open until filled with limited need-based scholarships available. We are committed to providing deserving young musicians the opportunity to pursue their passion for music in an intensive jazz instruction environment, regardless of financial resources. Scholarships are made possible by the Jazz Camp Scholarship Fund.
