Vocalist Trelawny Rose has been wowing the central coast of California with her passionate vocals since she began signing with the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir at age 18. Since then she’s developed as a jazz-singing dynamo and invaluable member of the Bay Area music community. Her debut album, 2010’s To Eva With Love was recorded live on the Kuumbwa stage, and Rose hasn’t looked back since. This performance will debut new material from an upcoming album set for 2013 release and features Mimi Fox on guitar, Allison Miller on drums and Rene Hart on bass.
Born in New York City, guitarist Mimi Fox started playing drums at nine and guitar when she was ten. Inspired by the wide variety of music enjoyed by her family – from show tunes, classical and Dixieland to Motown – she found her true calling when she was fourteen and bought her first jazz album. That album, John Coltrane’s classic Giant Steps, changed the course of her musical life. She began touring as a guitarist right out of high school and eventually settled in the San Francisco Bay area where she became a sought after session and live player. Just Jazz Guitar noted: “This is simply jazz guitar playing at its best. Her ideas are creative, heartfelt, and sophisticated.”
The rhythm section showcases the esteemed Rene Hart on bass and the masterful Allison Miller on drums. NYC-based Miller goes from leading her band, BOOM TIC BOOM, to playing with legendary songwriting vocalists Ani DiFranco, Brandi Carlile and Natalie Merchant, to touring with avant-garde saxophonist Marty Ehrlich and legendary organist Doctor Lonnie Smith. She approaches each of these musical situations with her own stylistic identity and a creative, fresh and energetic approach. Allison was chosen as “Rising Star Drummer” in Downbeat’s 53rd and 58th Annual Critics Poll.
The music this powerhouse crew will be bringing to Kuumbwa is that which will appear on Rose’s upcoming sophomore album, and will include a few carefully selected favorites, as well her debut compositions as a songwriter. These original tunes will bring to life the early impressions of Rose’s parent’s vinyl collection, which included the likes of Joni Mitchell, Pink Floyd, Kurt Elling and more. The result is unique pairing of well-loved pop standards with a jazz sensibility. Consider this gig a sneak peak at a new blockbuster.
