“Parra possesses a voice with personality and soul.” — Andrew Gilbert, NPR’s California Report
Vocalist Kat Parra casts a wide net over a variety of musical topographies. She delves into a world of sound with forays into Middle-Eastern, Afro-Peruvian, and Sephardic musics, pushing well beyond the conventions of Latin jazz. Her ability to sing fluently in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Ladino is a passport into the richness of contrasting musical cultures. She is ably backed by Murray Low – keyboards; Masaru Koga – woodwinds/percussion; Chris Lopes –bass; Katja Cooper – percussion; and Dan Foltz – drums. Parra and her world ensemble are celebrating the release of Las Aventuras de Pasión.
Kat Parra grew up in a musical family where she was encouraged to develop her talent. As a youngster she studied piano, guitar and pursued classical flute studies in her teens through her college years. But she was also testing out her abilities as a vocalist and developing an interest in Latin jazz and Latin music of all kinds. She attained her degree in music at San Jose State, including two years of previous study at UCSC. Although at the time, she was married and starting a family, Parra kept a hand in the music scene, singing in Bay Area Top-40 cover bands, and later, Latin group Charanga Nueve. She also studied graphic design, which led to a long-term position at a Silicon Valley tech firm.
Today, with her children grown, Parra is back into music full-time, exploring the sounds of Old and New World cultures. Her 2006 debut album, Birds In Flight, announced her arrival as an exceptional Latin jazz vocalist with a unique approach. Her follow up recordings, Azucar de Amor and Dos Amantes, put her on the international stage, with invitations to perform in Mexico, Brazil and Europe. Her latest CD, Las Aventuras de Pasión, produced by Wayne Wallace, fully immerses Parra in the Ladino music tradition of the Sephardic music, which has become one of her passions as reflected in its title. Latin Jazz Corner crowned her Best Latin Jazz Vocalist for 2008 and 2010. The Jazz Journalists Association nominated Azucar de Amor for 2008 Latin Jazz Album of the Year, and Jazz Times magazine called her, “… an exceptional world-music ambassador.”
