“Del Morao is special…tenacious and extravagant.” – New York Times

One of the most sought after guitarists on today’s flamenco scene, Diego del Morao is known for his work with such notable artists as José Mercé, Diego el Cigala and Niña Pastori. The fact that the legendary Paco de Lucía made a cameo appearance on Del Morao’s most recent solo release, 2010’s Orate, speaks to the level of respect he commands. The son of the legendary guitarist “Moraíto,” who along with family patriarch Manuel Morao, developed the signature sound of traditional Jerez-style flamenco guitar, Del Morao takes that family legacy into the 21st century. Expect an authentic night of flamenco with dancing, singing and amazing guitar work.

Born in 1979 in Jerez, Spain, Del Morao began his flamenco studies at the famous El Carbonero School, as well as from his father, “Moraito” Chico II.  His upbringing in this atmosphere of famous tocaores (roughly translated to a “flamenco guitar dynasty”) was fundamental to Del Morao’s prowess in the flamenco arena.  On this family connection, Del Morao states: “For me it’s been a stroke of luck in every sense.  Everything I’ve learned from my father…has been good…I’ve never found cases where I’ve been compared with someone in the family.  I’ve always benefited from the name I have, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t demand a certain amount of responsibility.”

Del Morao’s demand as a guitarist soared to new heights in 2004, when he played on recordings by Jose Merce, Nina Pastori, Montse Cortes, La Tana, Potito and more.  As Del Morao puts his “I’m very happy to have been able to work with all those artists” but you can really see Del Morao’s heart and soul when he steps out on his own, as he has been doing over the past couple years.

2010 saw the release of his solo debut Orate (released in the United States in 2011), which brought rave reviews from purists and new fans alike.  Del Morao is currently touring behind this album and continuing his path in the family business.
