“… a cutting-edge jazz player and composer…” – JazzTimes

Trumpeter Erik Jekabson channels the muse of West Coast jazz icon Chet Baker for this special concert. Baker, one of the storied tragedies of jazz, nonetheless left behind a rich musical legacy that still influences countless musicians. To jazz fans in the 1950s, he was the epitome of the ‘cool’ West Coast sound: harmonic and melodic sophistication simmering on low heat. Bay Area trumpeter/vocalist Jekabson has tapped into that legacy with help from Smith Dobson V on tenor saxophone and vocals, Jon Monahan on guitar, John Wiitala on bass, and drummer Akira Tana. While highlighting the music of Chet Baker, Jekabson brings his own inventive interpretation to Baker’s style.

Jekabson grew up in Berkeley, California, a town that has given the jazz world a generation of top musicians, including Joshua Redman, Charlie Hunter, and Benny Green. After earning a Bachelors degree at Oberlin College, he dove into the professional music scene, recording and working as a sideman. He has toured and performed with Illinois Jacquet, John Mayer, the Howard Fishman Quartet, and New Orleans funksters Galactic. His session work has involved everything from movie soundtracks to video game soundtracks. In addition to numerous sessions as a sideman, Jekabson has released two of his own CDs, Intersection in 2002 and Crescent Boulevard in 2010. He also has co-production credits on Vista: the Arrival and New World Funk Ensemble.

After returning to the Bay Area to earn his Masters degree in composition at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Jekabson has kept his career on point as a performer in various ensembles, either as a sideman, or as a leader of his own groups. Around the Bay Area you might hear him with Larry Vuckovich, Marcus Shelby, Lavay Smith, the Jazz Mafia or Terry Disley among others. Additionally, he is very involved in music education, teaching at the JazzSchool Institute and several Bay Area colleges  Join the Erik Jekabson Quintet as they revisit and re-explore the music of jazz legend Chet Baker. For fans of West Coast jazz and Chet Baker’s music – this is one concert not to miss!
