“Breathes new life into [gypsy jazz].” – SF Gate

Who would have thought that 78 years after the Hot Club of France began sponsoring a quintet featuring gypsy jazz guitar phenom Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grapelli, that similar combos dedicated to their unique style would continue throughout generations, and across the globe.  For nearly twenty years, the Hot Club of San Francisco has been one of the finest of these contemporary purveyors of the gypsy jazz genre.

Led by ace guitarist Paul Mehling, the Hot Club of San Francisco is one of the Bay Area’s great musical treasures. Mehling started the band by coaching some of his favorite locals musicians on how to play the gypsy jazz style, and blending it with the classic jazz styles of NYC’s 52nd Street.  Since it’s inception, the Hot Club of San Francisco has had a “swing or die” approach that’s ingratiated itself with fans across many genres. This outing will feature vocalist Isabelle Fontaine, who will step away from her usual rhythm guitar duties to belt out a selection of classics and little-known gems.

Mehling and violinist Evan Price emulate Reinhardt and Grappelli while retaining their own individual flavors.  But the Hot Club of San Francisco really sets itself apart from the original model by adding Fontaine on vocals.  With her smooth alto voice and buoyant phrasing, she brings joyful elements to classics such as “What a little Moonlight Can Do,” “Cest Si Bon,” “I Love Paris” and more.

This evening is in celebration of the Hot Club of San Francisco’s newest album, Live at Yoshi’s San Francisco, which finds then in top form in their home stomping ground of San Francisco.  Experience the energy and prowess captured on this new CD brought to life in Santa Cruz and witness one of the most notable groups performing gypsy jazz today.
