Steve Wilson and Friends
Thursday, September 20, 2012
The music of Steve Wilson and Friends delves into the full spectrum of jazz. From straight-ahead swinging to Latin, funk, and Brazilian grooves, Wilson’s group thrives on variety. The first set will feature his “Friends” lineup, with Wilson on trombone and vocals; Martan Mann – piano, Gino Raugi – guitar, Stan Poplin – bass, Michael Strunk – drums, Modesto Briseno – trumpet and flugelhorn, Scott Nordgren – alto saxophone and flute, Dale Mills – tenor saxophone and clarinet, Jessica Lowe-Wilson – vocals and Geneva Wilson – vocals. The second set features the excellent vocal quartet Mainswing with soprano Michele Rivard, alto Mona Dena, tenor Mark Bidelman, and Steve Wilson singing bass.
Steve Wilson has performed at many venues and festivals around the Bay Area including several performances at the Monterey Jazz Festival with different ensembles. Influenced by trombone greats Wayne Henderson, Bill Watrous, and J.J. Johnson (for whom he opened at the Monterey Jazz Festival some years back), Wilson’s involvement in the Santa Cruz music scene stretches back over four decades. Amid his busy gig schedule in the ’70s and ’80s, you might find him playing at the old Cooper House sidewalk cafe, where local jazz musicians were regularly showcased or performing at the old Bayview Hotel with Frank Leal. Over the years, Wilson has participated in dozens of groups, including the Union Dues Big Band, Havana Jazz and Midnight Mambo. On the popular music side of things, he has recorded or performed with James Durbin, Harper’s Bizarre and The Flying Karamotzov Brothers. In the classical realm, he has been a member of the Santa Cruz Symphony, the Cabrillo Music Festival Orchestra and the Reed Street Brass Quintet. More recently, Wilson has been performing with the popular White Album Ensemble and for Cabrillo Stage.
Wilson received his bachelors and masters degrees in education from UCSC, and began teaching music theory, songwriting and voice at Cabrillo College in the late ’70s. In addition, he has also taught Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Improvisation, and Jazz Choir. Wilson has taught in the Santa Cruz City Schools for almost two decades, where his jazz ensembles and jazz choirs have received top honors. He also directs the Kuumbwa Jazz Honor Band and Summer Jazz Camp programs.
