“A beautiful and fascinating exchange.” – Afropop Worldwide
This coalition of women do the seemingly impossible in bringing to life much of the endless range of music that is born of the African continent. Led by Ivory Coast natives, singer/dancer Dobet Gnahore and vocalist/bassist Manu Gallo, the group draws inspiration from not only from African genres, but funk, R&B and pop. They are joined by an all-star band that includes Cameroonian singer Kareyce Fotso and German-born Leni Stern. Together, the women create an exhilarating journey focusing on the richness of the African traditions of the voice and song.

Brought to you by International Music Network (IMN), which has been bringing world music to enraptured audiences for over two decades, this new installment of Acoustic Africa follows in the footsteps of hugely successful outings in 2006 and 2011.  This performance focuses primarily on the voice, and features two of Africa’s greatest up-and-coming vocal talents, augmented by a cast of fine African and European musicians.

Dobet Gnahore is a vocalist and dancer who has been steadily gaining recognition as a powerhouse talent. Manu Gallo originally garnered acclaim for her role as bassist in the Afro-pop group Zap Mama.  Kareyce Fotso is another young talent who consistently blends Afro-pop with traditional African music as well as Western sounds.

German-born and NYC-based guitarist Leni Stern joins them in her role as musical director.  Prowess as a guitarist aside, Stern has also released four acclaimed albums of African-inspired material.  These great musicians will be backed by a band of heavyweight vets, including balafon player Aly Keita , who cut his teeth with Joe Zawinul.   With each individual’s different backgrounds and histories, Acoustic Africa brings to the stage a fascinating cross-section of culture, music, camaraderie and passion.
