Bill Charlap Trio

“…world-class jazz pianist…” –The New York Times
Jazz swings at its best when it’s in the hands of someone like Bill Charlap, a master of the piano trio tradition. Whether performing an obscure bebop tune, or an American Songbook classic, Charlap’s sense of phrasing and harmonic intuition keeps the music percolating. Although not related to one another, Charlap’s long-time cohorts, Peter Washington and Kenny Washington, on bass and drums, respectively, perform as if they were born to play together. After thirteen years as a trio the interplay between these three musicians verges on the telepathic. You will not hear a finer straight-ahead, jazz piano trio than this one. The Grammy nominated Live at the Village Vanguard is their most recent CD.
New York native Bill Charlap was born into a ‘show biz’ family and began piano lessons at the age of three. His father was Broadway composer “Moose” Charlap, and his mother, Sandy Stewart, received a Grammy award nomination for the recording My Coloring Book. Bill’s professional career has spanned the gamut of gigs, from accompanist to bandleader. He has performed with many prominent jazz artists, including Phil Woods, Gerry Mulligan, and Wynton Marsalis.
The Bill Charlap Trio was formed in 1997, with bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington (no relation), and immediately drew critical raves. The word was soon out that Charlap was a clever, mature improviser with a virtual pedigree in music of The Great American Songbook. He signed with the iconic Blue Note Records, in 2000, and released a string of heralded recordings, two of which received Grammy award nominations. In 2009, for Blue Note’s 70th anniversary, Charlap was appointed musical director for the Blue Note 7, an all-star septet made up of the label’s artist roster. Time magazine has said of Charlap, “… no matter how imaginative or surprising his take on a song is, he zeroes in on its essence.”
