Chris Thile named 2012 MacArthur Fellow
Thile to appear with his band Punch Brothers,
November 30th at the Rio Theatre
(October 9, 2012)
Mandolinist Chris Thile, of the band Punch Brothers, has been announced among the 2012 MacArthur Fellows.
The MacArthur Fellows Program awards unrestricted fellowships to talented individuals who have shown extraordinary originality and dedication in their creative pursuits and a marked capacity for self-direction. There are three criteria for selection of Fellows: exceptional creativity, promise for important future advances based on a track record of significant accomplishment, and potential for the fellowship to facilitate subsequent creative work.
Chris Thile and the Punch Brothers will be appearing for one night, Friday, November 30th at the Rio Theatre in Santa Cruz. Chris Thile is a young mandolin virtuoso and composer whose lyrical fusion of traditional bluegrass with elements from a range of other musical traditions is giving rise to a new genre of contemporary music. With a broad outlook that encompasses progressive bluegrass, classical, rock, and jazz, Thile is transcending the borders of conventionally circumscribed genres.
In 2013, Thile will release a new recording of solo mandolin music, including transcriptions of J.S. Bach and some of his favorite contemporary composers.
