Join Kuumbwa Jazz as we participate in First Friday, Santa Cruz’s popular visual art walking tour on Friday, November 2nd. Visual artist Gene Torchia creates limited edition lithographs from hand drawn charcoal renderings. Torchia’s “Jazz Masters Print Series” honors the essence of the jazz musicians who have given the world so much wonderful music.

Says Torchia, “My artwork is driven by music. I am a jazz and classical guitarist who expresses my love of music through art. As I listen to music, I draw and handprint my work using the music to set the mood of each art piece. Like practicing my musical instrument daily, I immerse myself in drawing each day to improve my artistic expression; it is an essential habit in my life.

The play of light and shadow is my primary focus. I refer to photographic images as I draw in charcoal. I love the tactile process of working layers of charcoal on paper and building a two- dimensional image into an image that appears three-dimensional. I attempt to make my drawing photorealistic and employ my style of drawing to enhance the work. When I am successful, the image looks like it lifts off the page. The process of hand printing on an etching press takes hours and each print takes on the texture of the paper and has a unique character born of the way the plate is inked. My work is a “labor of love,” and I receive a surprise every time I finish a print.”

Santa Cruz native and recent college graduate Dillon Baiocchi will perform original music with Baiocchi on alto saxophone, Michael Glick on keyboards and James Levine on drums. Baiocchi’s music is a unique blend of the many different cultures and styles of music he has experienced. Baiocchi attended the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City, graduating in only three years with a BFA in Jazz Saxophone. While jazz has remained a large influence in his music, during the past year he has found inspiration from a much broader spectrum of contemporary music. Artists such as Bon Iver, Radiohead, Bjork, and Sigur Ros have begun to turn Baiocchi’s music in a new direction. In the past few months, his music has been performed in collaboration with choreographer Darrian O’Reilly, the Sacramento Comedy Spot, and with performers at the Scuola Teatro Dimitri in Switzerland.
