Jason Lewis: The Supportive Roll of the Rhythm Section
Wednesday, November 28
Kuumbwa Jazz
FREE Workshop – open to all levels

At the core of music, rhythm provides the very foundation on which melody and harmony can function. And, at the core of a jazz ensemble, the rhythm section can make or break the harmonic and rhythmic mood of the music, determining its success or failure. Drummer Jason Lewis, Scott Sorkin (guitar) and John Shifflett (bass), will illustrate the techniques needed to play in a rhythm section, and how to work as a cohesive and empathetic unit. Head arrangements (the informal arrangement of a song), dynamics, and interplay between the players, will be demonstrated in performance. The function of each instrument in the rhythm section and the techniques involved will be discussed afterwards. All instrumentalists, from beginning to advanced performance levels, are encouraged to attend. If time allows, those musicians who would like to sit-in with the trio will be welcomed to do so.

Jason Lewis has been a mainstay of the Bay Area music scene since the mid-’80s. A 1989 graduate of San Jose State University, he received his BA in music as a classical percussion student under the supervision of Anthony Cirone. Over his twenty-five year career, Lewis has performed with a varied list of top musicians, including Gary Burton, James Moody, and John Handy. He has toured and recorded with Boz Scaggs, Michael Brook, and Taylor Eigsti. On the classical side of things, he has performed with the San Jose Civic Light Opera and the San Jose Symphony. In addition to teaching drumset at San Jose State University, Jason has facilitated music clinics throughout the Bay Area, including the Stanford Jazz Workshop.

Guitarist Scott Sorkin often performs with Kristen Strom, John Donaldson Quintet, and Crossing Borders. Aside from being an excellent guitarist, Sorkin is an audio engineer and producer for Open Path Music. Bassist John Shifflett has worked with Jason Lewis for many years in numerous groups and projects, including Boz Scaggs’ CD of jazz standards, But Beautiful, and the subsequent tour with Boz. John has performed with a long list of top jazz musicians, including Dave Liebman, Bobby Hutcherson, and Tom Harrell.
