“…a remarkably deep musician.” – Jazz Times

Charlie Hunter is back at Kuumbwa, and just in time for the holidays. This annual December tradition finds an old friend on familiar ground, as the master guitarist connects with the Kuumbwa audience to catch up on the past year of music. Appearing as a duo with longtime cohort, Bay Area-based drummer Scott Amendola, (2/3rds of the heralded Charlie Hunter Trio), they will be supporting their new album Not Getting Behind Is The New Getting Ahead. This new record is a continuing exploration of their deep musical friendship that is sure to translate to a dynamic live performance onstage.

Hunter began his musical journey in Berkeley and gained traction in the industry as the leader of his famed namesake trio in the early 90s.  Since his debut as a leader he’s released seventeen albums, many of which feature Hunter playing unique guitars, namely his signature seven-string model.  Amendola has also been indispensable to the Bay Area music scene for many years and has collaborated with the likes of Nels Cline, Bill Frisell, Jenny Scheinman and countless others.

The duo’s new album Not Getting Behind Is The New Getting Ahead is a complete departure from the tone of last year’s solo Hunter album Public Domain.  This new release is also Hunter’s first recording of original compositions in three years.  “Our intentions in making this record was to tell a bunch of stories around the central theme of the album’s title,” says Hunter.  “The new tunes are meant to evoke some of the tings you might see in your travels through the USA these days.  Scott and I wanted to think of each composition as a starting point for some kind of narrative.”

A unique factor in the recording of this record is that it captures both musicians playing in the same room simultaneously.  As Amendola puts it, “one of the best elements of this new album is that we didn’t use any headphones…we could hear everything naturally and acoustically.”  The basic foundation for this musical synchronicity is the rapport that Hunter and Amendola have built in their nearly twenty years of playing together; a rapport that will surely only strengthen with time.
