“…full of emotive expressionism.” – All About Jazz

Since her 2004 recording debut, vocalist Tessa Souter has been hailed as a truly standout talent and has been gracing venues from Russian Philharmonic halls to Manhattan jazz clubs and everywhere in-between. With three albums of expertly delivered material behind her, Souter has now released Beyond the Blue which has been lauded as her “breakout recording.” This record features Souter’s own haunting and evocative lyrics set to the tune of crystalline classical melodies.  The tour in support of this album features Souter backed by acclaimed saxophonist Don BradenChristian Tamburr on vibes and John Shifflett on bass.

Born of English and Trinidadian parents, Souter’s voice has set her apart, as the LA Times puts it, as “one of the few exceptional standouts in the crowded field of female jazz singers.”  Her first album, Listen Love (Nara, 2004) evokes the sensuality and passion of Andalusian Spain and the Middle East.  Nights of Key Largo (Venus, 2008) featured bold takes on beloved standards and her Motema label debut, Obsession (2009), showcased daring takes on iconic pop tunes by The Beatles and Cream, as well as jazz tunes by Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard and more.

This year’s Beyond The Blue is taking her career to the next level with praise and good press abounding.  The arrangements of classical melodies on this record found her partnered in the studio with some of jazz world’s elite: pianist Dave Kuhn, bassist David Finck, drummer Billy Drummond, vibraphonist Joe Locke, saxophonist Joel Frahm and Gary Versace on accordion.  These players create a musical foundation over which Souter soars.  As the Chicago Examiner puts it, “The beauty of this project lies in the synergy of melodies, lyrics, and Souter’s consummate musicality, carried by her clarion, gently burnished timbre.

Souter’s instrument is one that is continually growing, and the Beyond The Blue album and tour represent her masterful abilities and knack for fine material and arrangements.  It’s hard to classify a singer with a penchant for singing pop, jazz, classical music…and doing it all with an expert touch, but that’s just what Souter does.
