“A sassy, salty, sweet voice…” – NPR
R&B/swing/blues-throwback group Davina and the Vagabonds have garnered a reputation as the busiest band in The Twin Cities. Vocalist Davina Sowers, who has been dominating the Midwest scene with her deeply powerful vocals since 2005, leads this Minnesota band. With a sound that’s equal parts Bonnie Raitt, Etta James and Amy Winehouse, she’s augmented by the band’s eclectic horn arrangements and rollicking back beats. They have been tearing up the Midwest and Eastern Seaboard’s musical scene, and these road-traveling vagabonds are continuing to expand their turf westward.
After Sowers’ first introduction to the Midwest music scene, it didn’t take long to inspire her to relocate to Minnesota from Key West, Florida. With commanding vocal and piano presence, she uses the skills she acquired as a classically trained pianist and gifted singer. After forming The Vagabonds, the band’s big break seemed to come after a barnstorming set at Duluth’s Bayfront Blues Festival in 2006, and from there the doors just kept opening
Although going by the scruffy name of The Vagabonds, this hard-driving band displays tight musicianship and diamond-sharp arrangements. New Jersey-born bassist Michael Carvale has been a touring musicians for many years, working the US, Canada and Europe, before joining Davina and company. Drummer Alec Tackerman started poundin’ the skins in middle school and studied under Terri Lyne Carrington and others at Boston’s Berklee School of Music. Trumpeter Dan Eikmeier grew up in St. Cloud, MN and has been living and performing in the Twin Cities for ten years while Ben Link has been one of Minneapolis’ premier trombone players since 2002, after his graduation from Indiana University.
As the Minneapolis Star Tribune puts it, “Two things remain consistent in all [Davina & The Vagabonds’] shows: her throaty, but cushiony voice, which has a sort of hardmattress comfort to it…and her band’s rollicking New Orleans flavor, driven home by dueling horns and a bayouthick standup bass.” This band has shared the stage with the likes of Little Feat, Buddy Guy, Elvin Bishop, Irma Thomas and more, and is certainly worthy of the excellent company.
