“Deutsch is a talent to watch” – Fort Worth Weekly

Known to many as the versatile keyboardist in the Charlie Hunter Trio, Erik Deutsch has worked with artists across the musical spectrum, from Norah Jones to Shooter Jennings, Citizen Cope to Rosanne Cash. As a bandleader, he released the album Hush Money in 2009 and Fingerprint in 2007, building up to his most recent release, 2012’s adventurous Demonio Teclado. This new record is filled with funky, slinky grooves and employs vibrant electronic colorings and a lush soundscape made up of his touring band, which includes Jeff Hill on bass, Tony Mason on drums and Jon Gray on trumpet.

Aside from his prodigious keyboard skills, Deutsch has been known to don the additional hats of composer, arranger, teacher and producer, all with the ability to lend his unique aesthetic to a wide array of musical stylings.  After cutting his musical teeth in Colorado, Deutsch now calls the borough of Brooklyn his home and keeps his schedule busy with countless live dates as both a sideman and a bandleader.

Perhaps Deutsch is best known for his role as the first keyboardist to work in Charlie Hunter’s trio.  During his three-year tenure with the guitarist, Deutsch hit stages from Russia to Turkey, Morocco to Mexico, and everywhere in between.  After that tour of duty, he released the album Hush Money in 2009.  This album introduced his penchant for cinematic-leaning compositions, complete with synthesizers, reed instrumentation/orchestration and psychedelic soundscapes in a chamber-rock setting.

His newest offering, Demonio Teclado, features a host of great players and excellent tunes, from slick new originals that call to mind the best of Miles Davis’ electric era, to off-beat yet masterfully executed covers, such as Neil Young’s “Don’t Let It Bring You Down” and Ike Turner’s “Gettin’ Nasty.”  Regardless of the setting, Deutsch’s playing is always a treat, but it’s most striking in the setting of this new band and album, as we are treated to a fully realized musical portrait of a fantastic artist.
