“….a jazz guitarist of glowing lyricism.” – New York Times
Philadelphia-born jazz guitarist/composer Kurt Rosenwinkel first earned attention playing alongside such iconic artists as Gary Burton, Paul Motian and Joe Henderson. His newest release, Star of Jupiter marks his first quartet recording in more than a decade, following 2001′s groundbreaking The Next Step. An intricately conceptualized collection of original compositions, Star of Jupiter transports listeners on a remarkable journey toward transcendence. Kurt Rosenwinkel once again displays the vision and artistry that place him among the most influential and inventive guitarists and composers in music today. His stellar quartet includes pianist Aaron Parks, bassist Eric Revis and drummer Kendrick Scott.
Rosenwinkel cut his teeth at Boston’s Berklee School of Music before being snatched up by Burton to tour, afterwards relocating to Brooklyn and continuing to hone his skills by gigging with Paul Motion, Joe Henderson, Brian Blade and many others. With his trademark delays and Gibson ES-335 guitar, he won the 1995 Composer’s Award from the National Endowment for the Arts and has been consistently recording and touring ever since.
On his first quartet album in ten years, Star of Jupiter assembles a stellar band and is simultaneously a departure from his previous offerings yet includes the elements that have made Rosenwinkel such a success in the jazz arena. As he puts it, it’s “that soulful groove feeling…it’s a quality the band naturally finds and brings out in the music…it’s a true expression of who I am as an artist and a person.” Much of the success of the album is founded on the musical connection between Rosenwinkel and pianist Aaron Parks. The two have been collaborating since 2006 and have a chemistry that is, in Rosenwinkel’s words, “a magical combination where the sum is more than its parts.”
One of his generation’s most prolific composers, the guitarist credits his hometown of Philadelphia with providing him with a solidly communal musical upbringing that informed his unique musical voice. It’s a voice that combines the Philly streets with the celestial twinkle that seems to have inspired the title of his new record. Rosenwinkel has continuously taken gallant steps in his artistry and with Star of Jupiter he articulates his musical vision on the deepest level yet.
