“…evoking both…Roberta Flack and Gil Scott-Heron.” – New York Times

No Beginning No End sums up how I feel about music right now,” says vocalist José James of his Blue Note Records debut record. The new album is a seamless musical experience that moves between different styles with remarkable fluidity. Bound together by James’ smooth 70s soul voice, it marks a new and exciting chapter in the career of the 33 year-old singer/songwriter. Since his 2008 debut, James has carefully cultivated a blend of jazz, hip-hop, R&B and electronica, exposing himself as a musical omnivore who seeks inspiration from a variety of sources and with his new album, James gives back with inspiration of his own.

Though barely into his third decade, James has already established himself as a trailblazer. The Minneapolis born, New York based singer has become an underground sensation in both the modern jazz and DJ culture scenes, thanks two his previous albums: 2008’s The Dreamer and 2010’s BlackMagic.  His varying tastes in music find him just as comfortable onstage with jazz legend McCoy Tyner, as he is with rapper Oh No or electronica pioneer Flying Lotus.  No Beginning No End illustrates all this, as well as displaying a deep regard for pop song structures, while retaining the jazz element of surprise.

Much of the music on the new record draws upon James’ love for the softer sounds of late 60s and early 70s R&B, particularly the likes of Roberta Flack, Donny Hathaway and Marvin Gaye. The album has smooth R&B inflections, gospel overtones, and the intimate quality present on many of the albums that have inspired him as a musician. But there are also colorations from electronica, North African rhythms and more, that give the album a new take on classic sounds that have inspired him.

Part of the reason that No Beginning No End feels so inspired and unencumbered is that it was conceived, recorded and produced without the constraints of any recording contract. “I feel like this is my first album as an artist,” James says, “This is the first time in which there were no label, no A&R – nothing but myself and my relationship and history with my music…once I realized that jazz singing is just something that I do and it’s just a label, it freed me as an artist to just write without any boundaries.”
