“… creative invention with chops…” – DownBeat

The Le Boeuf Brothers, saxophonist Remy and keyboardist Pascal, mark the Kuumbwa premiere of A Dream: The Musical Imagination of Franz Kafka. Composed by Remy and narrated by Shakespeare Santa Cruz actor Paul Whitworth, the piece is based on The Dream, a short story by Franz Kafka. To perform the piece, the Le Boeuf Brothers’ quintet, augmented by the Myth String Quartet, is transformed into a wonderful nine-piece chamber jazz ensemble. Inspired by Charles Mingus’ compositional use of poetry and spoken-word, Remy integrates a compelling storyline with gripping music, eschewing abstraction for the sake of abstraction in favor of a clear style that engages the listener.

Born and raised in Santa Cruz, the Le Boeuf’s were encouraged by their parents to develop their musical abilities. Now, as mature performers, Remy and Pascal exemplify the post-jazz/fusion generation whose predilection for musical genre-jumping creatively re-employs the jazz tradition as a platform for innovative composition. Their fresh approach has paid off with critical raves and several awards, including Best Album & Best Song of the 2006 Independent Music Awards, and 1st place in the 2010 International Songwriting Competition. Additionally, the brothers have established themselves among the up-and-coming musicians of the New York jazz elite and have performed at several major jazz venues, including the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Umbria Jazz Festival, and Jazz At Lincoln Center.

Aside from Remy, on alto saxophone and oboe; Pascal on piano, the Kafka Project features Mike Ruby on tenor and soprano saxophones; Martin Nevin on bass; and Peter Kronreif on drums. The Myth String Quartet features Fung Chern Whei – violin; Tallie Brunfelt – violin; Kim Uwiate – viola; and Isaac Melamed – cello. Regarding his composition, A Dream: The Musical Imagination of Franz Kafka, Remy says: “My goal is to engage the listener by blending the music and story into each other to create a synergy that highlights the beauty in both. I often feel that modern jazz finds itself in a realm of such abstraction that it puts off many listeners who are less familiar with the jazz tradition. This project is about something clear… Kafka’s story unfolds like a perfect song.” If you’ve ever wondered what a Franz Kafka story ‘sounds’ like, the Le Boeuf Brothers have the answer.

This performance has been made possible with support from Chamber Music America’s 2011 New Jazz Works: Commissioning and Ensemble Development program funded through the generosity of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
