“…probably the best tenor player in the world…” – Ornette Coleman
Free-jazz pioneer/saxophonist Pharoah Sanders got his start playing with Sun Ra, rose to fame in John Coltrane’s group and was given his stage name by Amiri Baraka. With that company, it’s only natural that he would rise to such cultural significance. His intense avant-leaning phrasing has become a touchstone of free-jazz, his collaborations with Coltrane were monumental to both artists, and his classic 1960’s and 70’s Impulse Records discography has cultivated legions of followers to his singular style. He continues to tour and record, representing a golden age in jazz, while still looking steadily towards the future.
William Henderson – piano
Nat Reeves – bass
Joe Farnsworth – drums
