“…one of the most acclaimed pianists in jazz.” – Los Angeles Times
As if a 2011 Grammy nomination wasn’t proof enough, Vijay Iyer has been called “the most commanding pianist and composer to emerge in recent years” (The Village Voice) and one of “today’s most important pianists” (The New Yorker). Needless to say, 2012 was a banner year for Iyer, who topped five categories in the DownBeat Critics Poll. March of last year saw the release of his album Accelerando, an intense and visceral album of original compositions and re-imagined covers.
The American-born son of Indian immigrants, the 41 year old pianist has been described by Pitchfork as “one of the most interesting and vital young pianists in jazz today,” and by the LA Weekly as “a boundless and deeply important young star.” 2012 was certainly a year of highlights for Iyer, a direct result of his remarkable seventeen-year track record in the industry and sixteen recordings.
Over the previous ten years, Iyer’s celebrated quartet – featuring award-winning saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa – mined “the magical and murky, imagined interzone, where the music of the Indo-Asian diaspora meets the Western Jazz tradition” according to All Music Guide, and released four acclaimed albums. Across this diverse output, Iyer’s artistic vision has remained unmistakable, his music firmly grounded in groove and pulse, yet rhythmically intricate and interactive. Looking towards musical points of reference from legends such as Thelonious Monk and Alice Coltrane, his music also incorporates the propulsion of African drumming and the hypnotic tones of his Indian musical heritage.
His newest album, Accelerando, was hailed by the New York Times as “an early frontrunner for jazz album of the year” and by Pitchfork as “…[Iyer’s] hardest-hitting trio album yet.” With Stephan Crump on bass and Tyshawn Sorey on drums, Iyer will be performing material from Accerlerando and beyond on this concert date.
