“… amazing musicianship…” – Seattle Post-Intelligencer

The Brubeck BrothersChris and Dan – have worked together, and separately, in various rhythm section configurations since they were kids, often performing with their illustrious father, jazz legend Dave Brubeck. Both men are excellent musicians who have carved out their own distinguished paths over the years, Chris as an award-winning multi-instrumentalist/composer, proficient on bass, trombone, and piano; and Dan, a virtuoso drummer adept at navigating complex time signatures and poly-rhythms. Rounding out the quartet are ace musicians guitarist Mike DeMicco and pianist Chuck Lamb. Life Times, the title of their fourth and latest CD, features a number of re-imagined Dave Brubeck classic compositions. For their Kuumbwa Jazz performance, the quartet will perform a “Tribute to Dave Brubeck” honoring their father’s amazing musical legacy as the brothers carry on the torch.

To generations of music lovers the Brubeck name is synonymous with the word “jazz.” Dave Brubeck’s long career as a composer/pianist and bandleader put modern jazz in the mainstream of American life. Unlike the jazz musician stereotype, he was also a happily married family man with six children, five of whom became professional musicians. Dan chose drums and Chris went for trombone and electric bass guitar. Chris’ award-winning compositions cross a broad range of styles: classical, jazz, rock, and folk. The Chicago Tribune called him, “… a 21st Century Leonard Bernstein.” Dan has led his own group, The Dolphins, and functioned as a producer on several Brubeck family projects. Influenced by drummers Joe Morello and Alan Dawson (both of whom played in Dave Brubeck’s groups), Dan is noted for his high-energy style. His father once observed: “Danny’s one of the most complicated poly-rhythmic drummers I’ve ever heard. It’s amazing what he can get going.”

Aside from their work with their father in Two Generations of Brubeck, Chris and Dan had worked together, and apart, in numerous groups before forming The Brubeck Brothers Quartet in 1999. The brothers’ familial connection makes for an instant rapport that is only enhanced by the addition of Mike DeMicco and Chuck Lamb. As a guitarist/composer, DeMicco has worked with Chris and Dan for over two decades, including playing with The Dolphins (Dan’s fusion group), Jack DeJohnette, Mose Allison, Garth Hudson (of The Band), and a long list of jazz luminaries. JazzTimes describes his guitar playing as “ the perfect blend of soul, polish and technique.” Keyboardist Chuck Lamb was a co-founder of the proto-fusion group Dry Jack. He has performed with Woody Herman, Dave Holland, and Tom Harrell, among other notables. Down Beat magazine says Chuck is “an expert soloist… his original compositions are varied and exuberant.” All put together, the Brubeck Brothers Quartet is a superb example of jazz in all of its moods: Blues, ballads, and post-bop ingenuity mixed with hints of classical aspirations.
