“…an American treasure…” – Billboard
With nine albums of original material to his name and appearances on countless records by the likes of Martha Wainwright, Cake, Teddy Thompson and Norah Jones, guitarist Jim Campilongo is a bone-fide guitar hero (or more specifically – a Telecaster hero). Combining heavy elements of country twang, blended with a healthy dose of avant-jazz adventurism, Campilongo has seen his role as a guitar guru greatly expand, as he is also a contributing editor to Guitar Player Magazine. His latest solo album is 2009’s Orange and in 2012 Fender Guitars bestowed on him the honor of introducing the Campilongo Signature Telecaster to their production line.
Born in South San Francisco, Campilongo discovered The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix at the age of nine, later stating “I knew I liked improvisation and long musical journeys…so I used to buy albums based exclusively on how long the tracks were…that’s how I discovered John Coltrane’s Live In Japan, John McLaughlin’s Devotion and a couple different Cream albums.” Growing to embrace everything from George Von Eps to John Denver, Campilongo began gigging at seventeen and found his ultimate guitar hero in the legendary Roy Buchanan, whom he saw some thirty times in the Bay Area.
After becoming a faithful devotee to the Fender Telecaster (Roy Buchanan’s guitar of choice), Campilongo kicked off his recording career in 1996 in San Francisco before quickly relocating to New York City in 2002. It was there that he formed his beloved Electric Trio and began touring extensively and landing prestigious gigs as a sideman. He recorded his album American Hips (Blue Hen Records) in 2003, introducing him as a new guitar master armed with a fresh batch of guitar instrumentals. He also gained a new audience due to his association with artists such as Norah Jones. His collaboration with Jones also extends to their country side-project The Little Willies, which released their latest album of classic country covers, For The Good Times, in 2012. The wide range of artists that Campilongo has performed with speaks to the rich musical style he has cultivated, brimming with rock, jazz and country flourishes.
His latest album, 2009’s Orange was produced by Anton Fier of Golden Palominos, recorded in Brooklyn and features Campilongo in his preferred format; the trio. Since 2005 the Jim Campilongo Electric Trio have performed every Monday at The Living Room, in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Time Out NYC recommends this recurring show as “one of the city’s strongest.”
