“Wistful, sultry rhythm and blues.” – New York Times
Catherine Russell’s name may not be as well known as many of the people she has worked for through the years, but Levon Helm, Paul Simon, Michael Feinstein, Jackson Browne, Steely Dan and David Bowie, have all benefited from her smoky vocal artistry. The daughter of prominent jazz musicians, Russell has been stealthily conquering the music world since the release of her 2006 debut album, Cat. She was voted Vocalist of the Year in the 2008 and 2010 Village Voice Jazz Critics Polls, and her latest CD, Strictly Romancin’, is a tour de force of scintillating jazz and blues.
Russell was born in New York City to parents who were long-time professional musicians. Her father is bandleader/pianist Luis Russell, who was Louis Armstrong’s long-time musical director. Her mother, bassist/vocalist Carline Ray, performed with the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, during World War II, and with innovative jazz pianist Mary Lou Williams. Her mother also holds degrees from Juilliard and the Manhattan School of Music. Growing up in such a household, it was only natural for Catherine to pursue a path in music. Early in her career, Russell found herself in-demand as a backup singer, doing recording sessions and touring with a long and varied list of top rock and pop performers, Levon Helm, Jackson Browne, Michael Feinstein, Rosanne Cash, Cyndi Lauper, Steely Dan, Paul Simon, David Bowie, and more.
In 2006, Catherine felt it was time to ramp up her solo career. She released her first CD, Cat. Her debut album charted well into the Top Ten of the iTunes Jazz charts, and was cited by National Public Radio as one of the top five CDs of 2006. Suddenly, she went from an in-demand backup singer to an in-demand solo artist, performing at major music venues and festivals around the world. She was also a featured guest on numerous television and radio programs. Her sophomore recording, Sentimental Streak, went to #3 on the iTunes Jazz Chart, and continued to win kudos throughout the music media. Her third release, Inside This Heart of Mine, was a deliberate change of pace, focusing on the music of her parent’s generation, with great songs by Fats Waller, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Howlin’ Wolf, and others. It hit #1 on several jazz charts, and established Russell as vocalist of depth and maturity. And now, with her fourth recording, Strictly Romancin‘, Russell has hit her stride. Noted jazz critic Nat Hentoff wrote, “It’s a delight to hear the real thing in Catherine Russell.” And she is the ‘real thing’ with a bluesy alto that brings to life classic jazz and blues tunes, from obscure gems to well-known American Songbook standards, Catherine Russell is a masterful performer.
