“… a fresh spin on contemporary jazz.” – Good Times

Dillon Baiocchi, (pronounced Bye-AHH-key) an alumnus of the Kuumbwa Jazz Honor Band, returns with his new project:  The Neon Deon Express. Representative of a new generation of jazz innovation, the Express infuses elements of contemporary non-jazz artists – Bon Iver, Sigur Ros, Andrew Bird, et al – with an interesting mix of originals and jazz standards.  Dillon cites alto sax legend Cannonball Adderley as a major influence on his playing. Like Adderley, Dillon believes music should keep an element of fun along side of its more serious objectives. The Neon Deon Express features Baiocchi on keyboard, saxophone, clarinet, and vocals; Michael Glick – piano; Tyden Binsted – bass; and James Levine – drums.

A native of Santa Cruz and a Soquel High School graduate, Baiocchi has studied with a number of upper echelon jazz artists, including Lee Konitz, Dave Douglas, and Vincent Herring. He was a recipient of the 2012 DownBeat Student Music Award for his composition, Mountain Road. Since graduating from New York’s New School of Contemporary Jazz, he has been keeping very busy with music projects. Aside from leading the Express, Dillon also performs with the Ben Murphy Orchestra and the Franky Rousseau Large Band. Expounding on his approach to performances, he once told the Santa Cruz weekly, Good Times, “At some of these gigs in the city (New York), the crowd can be so serious and critical. That’s OK, but I want to be sure the music-making is fun too.”
