“…boldly unpredictable…” – All About Jazz
John Scofield’s guitar work has influenced jazz since the late 70’s and is still going strong. The possessor of a distinctive sound and unending stylistic diversity, Scofield is a masterful improviser whose music generally falls somewhere between post-bop, funk and R&B. He has prominently led his own groups and recorded over 30 albums as a leader, including collaborations with the likes of Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden and Bill Frisell. This date will revisit 2002’s raucous, electronic-infused Überjam album and will feature Andy Hess on bass, Avi Bortnick on rhythm guitar, and Tony Mason on drums.
Born in Dayton, Ohio in 1951, John Scofield spent most of his childhood in Connecticut, discovering a love of music at the early age of eleven. After attending the Berklee School of music in Boston, he landed a job playing with Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker. From there on, he embarked on a continuous musical journey, playing with the biggest names in jazz; names such as Billy Cobham, Miles Davis, George Duke, and Charles Mingus.
He released his first solo recording, John Scofield, in 1977, before joining Miles Davis for three consecutive albums. While still with Davis, Scofield continued his solo career and released two more albums as a leader. At the end of his tenure with Davis, he started what is now referred to as his Blue Matter Band, which released three albums. He spent the first half of the nineties with Blue Note Records, playing with a quartet that included Joe Lovano, Charlie Haden and Jack DeJohnette, with whom he recorded several critically acclaimed albums. Towards the end of his tenure with Blue Note, Scofield returned to a more funk and soul jazz-oriented sound, a direction which has dominated his subsequent output, culminating in the jazz, jam-band, electronic fusion that is the Überjam Band. Scofield also refined his jazz-jam chops by touring with Medeski, Martin and Wood in 2011 along with a studio and live album from the four-some.
The connection between Scofield and Kuumbwa Jazz has become a close one over the years, and he is now one of the visages in the mural adjacent to Kuumbwa, titled “Jazz Alley.” Scofield has brought numerous groups to Kuumbwa and appeared on our stage countless times over the years, and as he puts it: “the Kuumbwa audience always brings out the best in us…I love playing there…the room itself has some vibrations that set up the creative process. The best place to hear jazz is in a club, I’m sure of that…and I can’t wait to get back [to Kuumbwa].”
