Kuumbwa Jazz’s 10th Annual Benefit Gala

October 22, 2012

The feel of Rome surrounded guests at Kuumbwa’s 10th Annual wine tasting, dinner and auction to support the organization’s concert and music education programs. Upon entering the tented and lighted patio, guests sampled fresh oysters from Bill the Oysterman, sipped champagne and tasted the 2009 Ridge Estate Cabernet Sauvignon.

Inside the club, the Roman harvest and wine theme continued as hundreds of candles illuminated grape vines and an abundance of greenery among the shimmering orange and gold table coverings. Erik and Judy Johnson of Erik’s DeliCafé graciously poured elegant and rare large format Sonoma and Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons from their private cellar while Miner Family Vineyards’ poured their 2008 “Oracle”.

Guests at the sold-out event mingled while surveying silent auction items, such as rare California reds and artwork from local artists Marvin Plummer and Charlie Powell. Chef Cheryl Simons served cooked-to-perfection beef tenderloin with fresh gnocchi and vegetables as the Q Morrow Trio kept the party rolling on stage.

Auctioneer Romney Dunbar got the crowd cheering at the chance to bid on unique and superb rare wines and packages such as a Pebble Beach Golf and Getaway and VIP  tickets and accommodations to the 2013 Victoria-Gasteiz Jazz Festival in Northern Spain. Kuumbwa Artistic Director Tim Jackson jumped on stage to talk up another great auction item: a pair of tickets and backstage passes to the illustrious Newport Jazz Festival started by famed promoter George Wein. One-of-a-kind items such as a gumbo dinner for 50 friends cooked by Kuumbwa Board member Deidre Hamilton and a special wine bottling party at DeRose Vineyards kept the bidding at a frenzy.

Just a few of the guests comments include:

“Brilliant party!” – Jesse Nickel, Barry Swenson Builder

“Best party of the year”! – Tamrya Rice (wife of Santa Cruz lawyer Ben Rice)

“Praises to all at Kuumbwa… our Jazz Treasure.”  – Debra Williams
