“… eclectic, eye-opening, and challenging…” –Good Times Santa Cruz

Rising saxophone star Ben Flocks has earned critical acclaim with performances at the Bern, Umbria, and Monterey Jazz Festivals. He has played with Joshua Redman, and also toured with Dave Brubeck as a Brubeck Institute Fellow in 2007. While strongly influenced by the classic saxophone triumvirate of Sonny Rollins, Stan Getz, and John Coltrane, Flock’s own music reflects a creative mix of jazz, Brazilian, folk, blues, reggae, and funk. He is ably assisted by the talents of guitarist Ari Chersky; keyboardist Sam Reider; bassist Garret Lang; and drummer Evan Hughes. Battle Mountain is the title of their recording debut.

Born twenty-three years ago, Flocks grew up in Bonny Doon immersed in music. He settled on the saxophone as his main means of artistic expression, eventually becoming a top young student performing in the Kuumbwa Jazz Honor Band, Monterey Jazz Festival’s Next Generation Band and the SFJAZZ All Star High School Ensemble. He attended the Stanford Jazz Workshop (where he now teaches), and also studied with Cabrillo College jazz instructor Ray Brown before being chosen by Dave Brubeck for a Brubeck Institute Fellowship. Flocks moved to the East Coast to study jazz at the New School in New York City and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2011. When his quintet opened for the legendary Ahmad Jamal, at the Bern Jazz Festival, they made enough of an impression to be invited back to Switzerland for a week-long gig at the renowned Marian’s Jazzroom.

Currently based in Brooklyn, Flocks teaches at the Stanford Jazz Workshop in the summer, and at New York’s Calhoun School during the school year. But whether he is on the East Coast or West Coast, Flocks stays very busy juggling a number of bands and music projects. His accomplishments have put him on a growing list of former Santa Cruzans, a list that includes Jeff Ballard, Sasha Dobson, Donny McCaslin, Kenny Wollesen, Jesse Scheinin, and the Le Boeuf Brothers, all of whom have made their mark on the international jazz scene.
