“… madly creative…” – The Los Angeles Times

Guitarist-vocalist John Pizzarelli makes no secret of his musical influences: Nat King Cole, Joao Gilberto, Frank Sinatra, and his own father, jazz guitar legend Bucky Pizzarelli. Even though Pizzarelli is an unabashed champion of the classic American Songbook standards by Rodgers, Mercer, and Gershwin, he is just as likely to dive into a contemporary tune, as he does on Double Exposure, his latest CD, where he spotlights composers of his own generation. No matter what the repertoire, the outcome is invariably music of the highest degree, delivered with enough virtuosity, wit and panache to qualify him as one of the most entertaining jazzmen on the scene.

Pizzarelli and wife, vocalist/actress Jessica Molaskey also co-hosts Radio Deluxe, a lively talk program and podcast featuring interviews and performances with special guest artists. Says Christopher Loudon from Jazz Times, “Among radio’s greatest pleasures is each weekly installment of Radio Deluxe, two hours of great jazz and smart, sassy repartee from John Pizzarelli and Jessica Molaskey, the hippest husband-and-wife team since Louis Prima and Keely Smith.”

Growing up as the son of a leading jazz guitarist it only seemed natural for John Pizzarelli to follow in his father’s footsteps. He began playing guitar at age six. In his teen years, he led a dual life, first playing with his teen-age peers in garage bands, then accompanying his father on professional gigs with major jazz artists, such as Les Paul, Clark Terry, and Zoot Sims. In 1990, with the release of his first album, My Blue Heaven, Pizzarelli launched his solo career. He received excellent exposure as the opening performer in concerts for Rosemary Clooney, Ramsey Lewis, and Dave Brubeck eventually winning rave reviews for his guitar playing and vocal talents. In 1993, Pizzarelli was the warm-up act for Frank Sinatra on his international tour, and performed at Sinatra’s 80th birthday celebration at Carnegie Hall.

These days Pizzarelli is well-established as a veteran performer who never fails to enthrall an audience with his intriguing guitar and vocal work. He openly acknowledges his admiration for the great Nat King Cole, and even views his own approach to music as an extension of Cole’s, albeit one that has been updated to include the influences of contemporary music. Pizzarelli enlivens the classic standards with a sureness that happens only with decades of experience and a creative ability second to none.
