“…one of my favorite NYC singers and songwriters” – Norah Jones
The daughter of legendary Bay Area jazz musicians, Sasha Dobson cut her teeth on the Kuumbwa stage before moving to NYC and becoming a club staple in Brooklyn and Manhattan. Her newly released third album, Aquarius, finds the singer and songwriter channeling her jazz routes into stranger, grittier sounds and song structures. The Joel Hamilton produced album is a raw and honest collection of songs, which could almost be described as elegant garage rock, while maintaining the jazzy, improvisational tinge inherent in Dobson’s musicality. Special guest, producer and co-creator of the new CD, Joel Hamilton, will be performing with Dobson this evening.
Born into Santa Cruz’ musical Dobson family, to vocalist Gail and pianist Smith, Sasha tackled New York’s jazz scene at age seventeen, where her career quickly picked up steam, and she soon began performing everywhere from the famed Small’s nightclub in Manhattan to Tokyo’s Blue Note. Initially a darling of the jazz world, Dobson honed her style with a penchant for scatting, improvisation and dexterous phrasing. 2004’s The Darkling Thrush proved her ability as one of the great young scat singers, while 2006’s Modern Romance added guitar to her ever-growing musical palette, and the 2010 six-song EP Burn served as a primer to her new, indie-leaning sound.
Over the past couple years, Dobson has also gained notoriety as a key musical player with Norah Jones; opening shows for the crossover star, as well as performing in Jones’ band, on guitar, percussion and background vocals. Together they have played amphitheatres and arenas worldwide, gigging with the likes of Willie Nelson and Wilco. “It’s nice to [come back to Kuumbwa] now because that was a pretty big journey…with Norah…it’s still powerful to come back there…I was raised singing [at Kuumbwa].”
With her new album in tow, presenting Dobson in a fresh soundscape, this show is sure to mark a new chapter for those who have witnessed her career from its inception. With the new material, Dobson has been incorporating her jazz singing roots into her songwriter, honing in on harmony with lots of room to maneuver and improvise. And it will certainly be a joyous occasion, since as she puts it: “Kuumbwa gigs are always like a reunion.” Though it could also be said that this concert will also serve as an unveiling of sorts, of some of Dobson’s finest music to-date.
