“…destined to be a force in music for decades to come.” – All About Jazz
Always keeping things fresh on the bandstand, Christian McBride is getting back to basics with his trio. Aside from his prowess as a bassist and his talents as a premier composer and arranger, McBride has become one of the great spokespersons for the genre. Hot on the heels of his spring release, People Music, the Grammy-winner presents his newest album, Out Here, McBride’s 11th recording as a leader. Whether he’s leading a full brass section or getting locked in the pocket with his trio, you can count on McBride to blend classic jazz presentation with forward-thinking movement. His stellar trio includes Christian Sands on piano and Ulysses Owens Jr. on drums.
Brought up on the road with his R&B bass-playing father, at just eight years old, McBride had already gained considerable proficiency with the electric bass. At fourteen, McBride caught the attention of Wynton Marsalis, who recognized his potential and began spreading the word of McBride amongst his accomplished musician friends. When a scholarship to Juilliard was awarded to McBride at high school graduation, he quickly relocated to New York.
Not long after setting foot in NYC, McBride’s sideman duties commenced, as his schooling continued. When Roy Hargrove invited him into his rhythm section a year later, Christian left formal schooling for a hands-on jazz education; where he learned from “experience with as many musicians as possible”. This led to a three-year stint with Freddie Hubbard, an ongoing engagement with Benny Green and a coveted opportunity to work with Ray Brown, who proved to be McBride’s ultimate mentor.
Since then, McBride’s resume stands alone, as he’s worked with the best of the best, in all genres. His credits include Sonny Rollins, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Isaac Hayes, Chaka Khan, James Brown, Sting, Don Henley, The Roots and D’Angelo…just to name a few. Featured in his current trio, Ulysses Owens Jr. has become a mainstay of McBride’s groups over the years, and the bassist has had an eye out for Christian Sands ever since hearing him on Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz program on NPR. Out Here (Mack Avenue Label) presents “a pretty diversified trio,” as McBride states. He adds “The real core foundation is hardcore swingin,’ blues and the American songbook. Part of that is because Christian [Sands] is so well-rounded and willing to go to so many places, that I can’t help but want to swing hard with him and Ulysses.”
