San Francisco native and local jazz pianist, Chuck Gee is best known for his talents as a music engraver and music editor for Sher Music Co. Here with a unique perspective and sensitivity to the musicians themselves, he combines his passion for music with his love of photography. Gee has photographed jazz artists for Yoshi’s, SFJAZZ, Stanford Jazz, and the Monterey Jazz Festival. This is Gee’s debut exhibition of jazz Images. DJ Vinnie will be spinning classic vinyl from Blue Note and Impulse Records from the 60s and 70s. DJ Vinnie was voted best local DJ by the San Francisco Bay Guardian Reader’s Poll. The KJ café and beverage bar will be open, so join us for a funky and festive First Friday!

DJ Vinnie Esparza has been a fixture on the San Francisco DJ circuit since 1994. His diverse sets range from soul, funk, jazz, and hip hop to Afro-Latin, bossa nova, reggae, and club beats. Born and raised in Oakland, California, Vinnie began his career in music at college radio station KZSC in Santa Cruz, California where he served as Music Director, a member of the station governing board and an on-air personality between 1990-1994. Upon graduating, he moved to San Francisco where he began a series of ongoing club parties, many of which are still going strong today. He has opened for such acts as Tito Puente, Jamiroquai, Lee Perry, Bebel Gilberto, Mongo Santamaria, The Meters, Jimmy Smith, Eddie Palmieri, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Scientist, Brother Jack McDuff, Greyboy All Stars, McCoy Tyner, Lee Fields and The Abyssinians among others. Vinnie has also appeared at the Monterey and Quebec City Jazz Festivals. For his sets at Kuumbwa Jazz, he will focus mostly on the funky jazz sounds from the late 60s and early 70s with touches of Latin jazz.  And yes, he still spins vinyl records.
