“[…a] dazzling saxophonist…” – New York Times
When described as “one of the transforming figures of early 21st century jazz,” (The Guardian UK), the bar gets set pretty high. Saxophonist Steve Lehman is delivering the goods, though. A native New Yorker, Lehman has a global fan-base, yet still receives accolades such as #1 Jazz Album of 2009 by his “hometown paper” The New York Times. A studious player, his music is bound in tradition, yet he and his trio create powerful forward momentum, framed around Lehman’s diamond-sharp tone. His trio, with bassist Matt Brewer and drummer Damion Reid, released the eclectic Dialect Fluorescent in 2012, which was included on many year-end ‘best-of’ lists.
A bona fide academic, Lehman received his B.A. (2000) and M.A. in Composition (2002) from Wesleyan University, where he studied under Anthony Braxton, Alvin Lucier and many others. He received his doctorate, with distinction honors, in Music Composition from Columbia University in 2012. As a Fulbright scholar studying in France during the 2002-2003 academic year, Lehman performed exhaustive research on the reception of African-American experimental composers working in France during the 1970s. He has since had numerous papers published and has lectured at universities worldwide.
As a saxophonist, Lehman has performed and recorded nationally and internationally with his own ensembles and with those led by Dave Douglas, Vijay Iyer, Oliver Lake, Jason Moran and Meshell Ndegeocello, among others. As a composer, the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), the Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin, and the renowned Talea Ensemble have performed his orchestral and chamber music pieces. It’s safe to say however, that it is in the trio format where Lehman most shines as a musician.
Bassist Matt Brewer has been a top-call sideman for the likes of Lee Konitz, Greg Osby and Steve Coleman, but has recently dug-in to the New York scene, becoming a composer-in-residence at downtown jazz club The Jazz Gallery. Drummer Damion Reid grew up in LA, but became a NYC transplant after attending The New School. Together, these three musicians represent some of the most well studied and forward thinking players in jazz, presenting a fresh outlook on the music, while always delivering killer tunes.
