“… full of life and brilliant…” – San Francisco Chronicle
The Winter Solstice Celebration has become an annual event featuring three popular Windham Hill artists: pianist Liz Story, a three-time Grammy nominee; fiddler/pianist/vocalist Barbara Higbie, also a Grammy nominee; and Celtic harpist Lisa Lynne, a multi-instrumentalist specializing in traditional folk instruments. Multi-instrumentalists George Tortorelli and Aryeh Frankfurter provide additional support, expanding the group’s sonic palette. For more than a decade, these performers have made the Winter Solstice project an exuberant event for everyone to enjoy during the holiday season.
California-native, Liz Story, started classical piano studies as a youngster. She lived in Europe during her teenage years, returning to the United States to study at the Juilliard School of Music and Hunter College. While living in New York City, she heard piano legend Bill Evans play at the Bottom Line, an event that inspired her to pursue jazz as an avenue of artistic expression. After returning to Southern California, she continued her music studies and gained professional experience playing solo piano at restaurants and bars. The solo gigs allowed her time to develop her improvisational skills and compositional style. When tapes of Story’s music came to the attention of Will Ackerman of Windham Hill Records, he was so impressed with what he heard that he signed her to the label, an auspicious first step on what has become a long, creative path.
Barbara Higbie, a talented composer and multi-instrumentalist, is a championship fiddler who is also known for her excellent abilities on piano. Her compositions reflect an enchanting mix of Celtic, African, Brazilian, American folk and jazz in her music. As a co-founder of Montreux, an acclaimed all-star acoustic ensemble, Higbie is very much at ease crossing stylistic barriers. She has performed with a mind-boggling list of artists that include Bonnie Raitt, the Kronos Quartet, Spyro Gyra, and Brazilian legend Milton Nascimento. Having appeared on more than 65 recordings, Higbie still believes performing “live” is the most important aspect of being a musician. She sees it as “… a devotional form. Live music can heal you physically, mentally, and spiritually.”
Lisa Lynne is primarily known for her compositions performed on the Celtic harp. Another gifted multi-instrumentalist among this ensemble of multi-instrumentalists, she specializes in playing Celtic folk instruments. Her recordings have consistently placed in the Top 20 on the Billboard charts. Aside from touring and recording, Lynne’s belief that music can have a healing effect on people has been the inspiration for her active participation in promoting live performances in hospitals.
Fellow multi-instrumentalists George Tortorelli and Aryeh Frankfurter round out this stellar quintet with sensitive musical support. Tortorelli not only plays bamboo flutes, he designs them, too. Conversant on a number of string, wind, and percussion instruments, Tortorelli has been featured on over 20 albums. His musical cohort, Aryeh Frankfurter, is a master of the folk harp family, as well as an excellent fiddler, and very much in-demand for numerous projects and collaborations. Put all together, this special group of performers brings an impressive array of inventive talent to celebrate the Winter Solstice at Kuumbwa Jazz!
