“…your mind is likely to be delightfully blown…” – SF Weekly
A legend of the Bay Area’s world music scene, Ashwin Batish is a sitar and tabla master. Trained from an early age in the north Indian classical traditions by his father, Pandit Shiv Dayal, Batish has forged his own unique style, melding pop, rock, jazz and other world music genres with Indian raga, resulting in his own special blend of Sitar Power. His pioneering efforts in world-beat music have earned him a special place amongst his contemporaries. Augmented by guitar effect pedals and amplification, Batish’s souped-up sitar sound is compelling and powerful. Based in Santa Cruz, Batish is also an educator and is one of our local music scene’s great resources.
Widely credited as playing a vital role in the revitalization of Indian music through his “raga rock” stylings, Batish incorporates Indian, African, Middle Eastern and Western sounds in his compositions. His music showcases the common threads through genres, simultaneously bending the boundaries of each one. His latest release Sitar Power – The Third Generation showcases this ethos.
As an educator, Batish has created a series of classes and seminars for sitar, dilruba, dholak, vichitra veena and harmonium. He has also brought his educational programs to universities across the country. But perhaps the greatest testament to his abilities as a teacher is his son Keshav, who is a powerhouse tabla player, a phenomenal trap drummer and a santoor player, to boot. The younger Batish is also a first-year member of the esteemed Kuubmwa Jazz Honor Band. Keshav will be joining his father onstage for this performance, along with sister Meena Batish on vocals, Murray Low on keyboards, Myron Dove on bass, plus special guests.
Don’t miss Ashwin’s Free Master Class on the Application of Indian Music Concepts to Jazz and World Music at Kuumbwa Jazz on Tuesday, February 18th.
