“… an extraordinary revelation of contemporary vocal jazz.” – Le Jazz Hot

Vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant has been impressing audiences everywhere with her arrangements of jazz and blues compositions, obscure and familiar. The multi-lingual Salvant, with a background in classical voice technique, also sings in French and Spanish. Her 2009 recording, Cecile, first caught the ear of jazz fans shortly before she won the 2010 Thelonious Monk vocal competition. And Salvant has been winning converts ever since. Wynton Marsalis,  Jacky Terrasson, and Archie Shepp are just a few of the top musicians with whom she has sung. The New York Times has said of the rising vocal phenon, “Ms. Salvant has it all: perfect pitch and enunciation… exquisite taste in songs, and a deep connection to lyrics.” Her latest CD, WomanChild, is up for a Grammy Award nomination (her first) in the Best Vocal Jazz Album category.

Growing up in Miami, Florida, Cécile was immersed in music: classical piano, choral singing, and private voice lessons. She went to college in France to study law, but also continued to study baroque and classical voice technique. It was during this time that she began to learn about improvisation and moving towards listening and performing jazz with reedman Jean-François Bonnel and his band. In 2009, things began to roll once she released her debut album, Cécile. She followed up by handily winning the Thelonious Monk Institute vocal competition in Washington D.C. Her creative interpretations of old, obscure jazz and blues tunes, as well as her ability to sing fluently in French and Spanish, have captured the attention of the listening public.

In addition to performing and recording with Jean-François Bonnel’s band, Salvant has also worked with famed Japanese saxophonist Sadao Watanabe, French jazz pianist Jacky Terrasson, and American avant-garde saxophone legend Archie Schepp. Her talent has taken her to a number of high profile venues and festivals, including New York’s Lincoln Jazz Center (with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra – who will be in Santa Cruz on March 8 at the Civic Auditorium) – The Kennedy Center, the Spoleto Jazz Festival, and other international venues.
