“…blues-injected grooves…in radiant colors…” – DownBeat

A true guru of the Hammond B-3 organ, Dr. Lonnie Smith has been recording and performing live for over five decades. Featured on over seventy albums, he has collaborated with a who’s who of musical greats across the jazz, blues and R&B genres. From the drawbars to the foot pedals, Smith is the complete organ virtuoso, whom JazzTimes described as “a riddle wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a turban!”  2012 saw the launch of his record label, Pilgrimage Productions, whose first release, titled The Healer, is a live record capturing the Dr. Lonnie Smith Trio at its finest.

Born in Buffalo, New York, Smith was introduced to gospel, blues and jazz by his mother. In his teens, he sang in several vocal doo-wop groups, including The Supremes, a group he formed long before Motown’s iconic group of the same name. In the late fifties Smith began playing the organ at the urging of the local music-store owner. As he puts it, “Even though I didn’t know how, I was able to play right from the beginning…I learned how to work the stops and that was it.  It’s a passion for me, so everything else came naturally.”

After playing his initial gigs in the Buffalo area, he landed a gig with guitarist George Benson and headed south to New York City, where they became one of the great bands on the NYC club scene. Smith also made his debut as a leader at that time, with the 1966 Columbia album Finger Lickin’ Good, and eventually found a decade-long home at Manhattan’s Blue Note Records.

Smith has garnered countless awards and accolades over his storied career, including being named DownBeat’s “Top Organist Of The Year” numerous times. Each bold album continues to draw in new audiences and cement his reputation as a legend, with an array of musical elements all at his fingertips.  In his own words, “the organ is like the sunlight, rain and thunder…it’s all the worldly sounds to me!”
