Tuck & Patti: Valentine’s Day Concert
Friday, February 14
Kuumbwa Jazz Center
Jazz and Dinner Packages Available

”… rich layers of emotional subtlety.” – Los Angeles Times

Simply stated, Tuck and Patti are one of the great duos in jazz. With Patti Cathcart’s expressive vocals and Tuck Andress’ fluid guitar stylings, no other musical accompaniment seems necessary for this renowned twosome. Whether performing an American Songbook standard, a classic by Santana or Jimi Hendrix, or one of their original compositions, Tuck and Patti make the music come alive. As the celebrated duo commemorates over 35 years of performing together, this night will be a continuation of our tradition of having this dynamic duo grace the Kuumbwa stage in celebration of Valentine’s day. Jazz and Dinner packages available.

After a chance meeting at a Bay Area audition in the late seventies, they formed a guitar and vocal duo. Initially, landing live gigs with this sparse instrumentation took some persuasion; once booked, however, the rooms quickly began filling with repeat fans. “We had never had so much fun, nor been so challenged,” says Tuck. “We went to play at a venue and forgot to take breaks. From then on, the duo has barely taken a break. Their recording career took off when Windham Hill Jazz signed them and resulted in 1988’s groundbreaking Tears of Joy.

This Valentine’s Day, join Kuumbwa Jazz in embracing Tuck & Patti’s one-of-a-kind formula: virtuosity and complexity; gracious, gospel-tinged vocals, the duo’s near-limitless range and volume of material from all genres, and even – perhaps – a jazz standard from the recent I Remember You album (T&P Records, 2008). In an ‘All About Jazz’ feature on this album, Andress remarked “If you want to hear about a ‘standard’- our standard – it is this: ‘Love is real. It is infinitely powerful. It is contagious and unstoppable’”

When asked about a special memory from past Valentine’s Day Kuumbwa shows, Patti recalls, “One of the things that’s recurred and has been really cool is when someone proposes marriage during the show…also, it’s become a tradition for a lot of people and after all these years I recognize them…I know that it’s something they try to do with each other each year, and that’s really cool.” Enjoy a night to remember this Valentine’s Day with Tuck and Patti.
