“…imaginative virtuosity…” – NPR

Since graduating from Berklee College of Music, Japanese pianist Chihiro Yamanaka has been racking up the accolades as a top tier musician and composer. A Universal Music recording artist, Yamanaka’s music pivots between original compositions and her unique presentation of standards. Her latest album, Because, is a tribute to The Beatles’ catalog and turns songs such as “Yesterday” and “Michelle” into expressions of herself. This is Yamanaka’s second Kuumbwa appearance in as many years, signifying her rise towards the top of the contemporary jazz scene.

A Universal Classics & Jazz recording artist, Yamanaka has been heralded as one of the most exciting jazz pianists and composers of her generation. Her music pivots between original compositions and her unique presentation of standards. Her previous record, 2012’s Reminiscence was her second US release, and aside from having reached #1 on the Japanese jazz charts, the album also won the Jazz Japan Award for ‘Album of the Year.’  Awaiting US release is 2013’s Molto Cantabile.

Currently based out New York, Yamanaka tours frequently across Europe and Japan and in addition to her prolific work in jazz, she is also an accomplished classical pianist who has performed with the Tokyo Symphony. She has appeared at the Kennedy Center’s Women In Jazz Festival, visited NPR’s JazzSet with Dee Dee Bridgewater and filmed a live DVD at NYC’s Iridium Jazz Club.

Her blending of classical technique and jazz improvisation is something to behold.  As the JazzTimes wrote in a 2011 concert review, “the Japanese pianist tore into two originals at the top of her set, sounding a bit like Mulgrew Miller on classically trained steroids with a progressive bent…right and left, jaws were dropping.” Yamanaka is a fierce talent with robust chops, plenty of soul, and a seemingly endless imagination for the musical possibilities of the piano trio.
