At the Nickelodeon Theatre
Benefitting local nonprofit, Rising International
If you’re a woman living in the United States aspiring to be a professional jazz musician, you’re in a field that seldom welcomes you. That was true at the beginnings of jazz in the 1930’s and it still rings true even today. The award-winning film “The Girls in the Band,” which chronicles the struggles, perseverance and triumphs that female jazz musicians have faced for generations, is proudly presented by Kuumbwa Jazz.
In anticipation of a limited run of “The Girls in The Band” in Santa Cruz, a special screening will take place on International Women’s Day with 100% of the proceeds going to the locally headquartered non-profit, Rising International.
Rising International, exists because as its founder, Carmel Jud says, “Across the street and across the world, it’s women and girls who are suffering the most.” When we think about extreme poverty and overall human rights violations against women, we often think about what’s happening to women in other countries. Jud says it’s important to realize that women in the U.S. now face the highest poverty since the great depression. New findings show that one third of American women are living at or under the poverty line.
This event also features Rising International’s Pop Up Global Marketplace which enables women to rise above poverty in over 20 countries. Products featured are handmade by women living in the worst places to be alive as a woman. The marketplace will be open from 6:00 to 7:00pm and will be located in the courtyard of The Nick. All proceeds from the film and marketplace will benefit Rising International’s local and global women’s economic development programs.
The JAZZ ON FILM series is a joint venture by Kuumbwa Jazz and The Nickelodeon Theatres.
