An Evening with Dan Robbins
Thursday, May 1
Kuumbwa Jazz Center
Acoustic and electric bassist Dan Robbins is a first-call bassist in the Bay Area and beyond, known in the jazz world as a fiery improvisational spirit with a driving backbeat. In his Local & Live showcase, Robbins features four of his favorite bands including the Phree Radicals, featuring Mike Shannon and John Whooley; the Tassajara Trio, with Eddie Mendenhall and Steve Robertson; Campbell-Robbins-Copley; and Wasabi featuring Ron and Alex Work with Tammi Brown. Expect an eclectic night of straight ahead jazz, funk, rock, pop, R&B, and originals.
Robbins has played and/or recorded in settings ranging form solo, duo & trio all the way to big band and orchestra and is known for his creative and driving bass parts. A master at acoustic bass, he also creates rich textures with his five, six and even seven-string electric basses, which allow him to play complex chord voicings and melodic phrases. Robbins is adept in all styles of music, from jazz to funk, Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, rock, blues to classical, it’s no wonder the Robbins has collaborated with the likes of Cedar Walton, Dori Cymmi, Claudia Villela, Deepak Ram, Christian McBride and Roy Hargrove over the years. A well-known educator, Robbins has been a stalwart in Santa Cruz’s musical education scene as well.
A regular on the Kuumbwa stage, Robbins is a vital part of our musical community and this unique show will see him presenting four of his distinct projects. The Phree Radicals group features local powerhouse drummer Mike Shannon and the electronic soundscapes of looper/multi-instrumentalist/composer John Whooley. Robbins will showcase his jazz side with the Tassajara Trio, featuring pianist Eddie Mendenhall and Steve Robertson behind the drum kit. You can expect this trio’s inspired takes on standards as well as originals from their album, First Meeting. The group of Kimberley and Doug Campbell, Robbins and Greg Copley (Campbell-Robbins-Copley…or CRC, rather) brings three-part harmony and in-the-pocket bass and drums blended with lilting flute and vocals. Lastly, Wasabi returns to the Kuumbwa stage with their dancefloor-friendly blend of funk, rock and party vibes, featuring special guest Tammi Brown on vocals, which will surely be a raucous end to this celebration of Robbins and local music.
