“…at the forefront of a rapidly changing performance culture” – New York Times

Hailed by NPR as “one of the groups that has really helped to shape the future of classical music,” yMusic is a sextet of young performers equally comfortable in the overlapping classical and pop music worlds. A unique combination of assorted strings and woodwinds, this bold group of orchestrators focuses on contemporary songwriters and bands, such as indie rock luminaries St. Vincent, My Brightest Diamond and Son Lux. On their debut album, Beautiful Mechanical, the group pairs these works with pieces by emerging composers Judd Greenstein, Sarah Kirkland Snider, and Gabriel Kahane, resulting in what Time Out New York named the #1 Classical Record of 2011.

Formed in 2008 with the goal of bringing classical chamber music to venues that don’t typically host classical or chamber groups, the ensemble has expanded it’s mission statement, if you will, to creating a new repertoire of arrangements for some of today’s most important and cutting-edge artists (with the artists often times writing compositions specifically for yMusic’s orchestrations).  On Beautiful Mechanic the arrangements take on a stately, yet whimsical tone, befitting the songwriters in a true collaborative manner.

The ensemble features Rob Moose (violin, viola), Clarice Jensen (cello), CJ Camarieri (trumpet, French horn), Alex Sopp (flute), Hideaki Aomori (clarinet, woodwinds) and Nadia Sirota (viola), who can collectively name Bjork, Peter Gabriel, Yo Yo Ma, David Byrne, Bon Iver and the New York Philharmonic on their performance resumes.

Utilizing the classical music convention of a performance ‘season,’ yMusic’s 2012-13 season saw them launching new projects with Dirty Projectors and members of Arcade Fire. With flashes of baroque festivity, to the Americana strains of Aaron Copland and the influence of contemporary chamber music stalwarts such as the Kronos Quartet, yMusic offers a new pallet of colors to bring to the canvas and a fresh batch of compositions to illustrate with their brushstrokes.
