“… a soulful singer and songwriter…” – Monterey Herald
Ann Whittington never stops refining and redefining her musical vision. As a singer/songwriter, Ann’s warm and welcoming voice has been serenading Bay Area music fans for years with an ever-evolving style of storytelling through song. She always enlists the best of Santa Cruz jazz talent for her eclectic projects, and her current group is no exception. Performing with Ann is a first-string, veteran lineup featuring Phil Smith, on tenor and flute; Gino Raugi, on guitar; Bill Bosch, on bass; Olaf Schiapicasse, of drums; and Jim Greiner, on percussion. Her two CDs, Symphony of Stars and The Great Dreamer, spotlight Ann’s original compositions, and she appears on Santa Cruz Jazz, Vol. 1 and 2.
Whittington was born in Liverpool, England. Her mother was Irish, and her father, originally from West Virginia, was an American. Drawn to music at a young age, Ann’s early influences were mainly Irish folk and American country music, but her desire to explore other musical forms spurred her interest in jazz. She says: “The fact that I stumbled into the jazz realms is not that far-fetched, I recognized in the jazz singer an archetype of the story teller, and this resonated with me.” She learned by doing, acquiring performing experience by sitting-in with groups around Santa Cruz, including Don McCaslin’s Warmth, one of the resident jazz groups at the old Cooper House.
As a mainstay on the Santa Cruz music scene, with over three decades of experience, Whittington has built a loyal following through collaborations with other musicians and as a solo performer. In her own words, she describes her approach to songwriting this way: “I begin my creative process by opening myself up to the unknown. I find some vehicle in which to begin this journey into improvisation, otherwise known as free-association. This seed or starting point can begin with writing, movement, rhythm, lyric, or sound, and then it takes off.” As her audiences can attest, Ann Whittington continues to grow as an artist, finding new avenues of expression and inspiration through music.
