“Now vs Now forges into altogether undeveloped musical terrain.” – NPR Music
Led by keyboardist Jason Lindner and featuring bassist Panagiotis Andreou and drummer Justin Tyson, Now vs. Now is a progressive electro-jazz rock trio like none other. The seeds of the band were planted in the early 2000s in New York City’s alternative jazz venues, where the players were able to blend together jazz, hip hop, rock, electronica and world music influences. Their most recent album, 2013’s Earth Analog (Now vs Now productions), was referred to by the New York Times as “a manifesto in the form of an album” and presents dynamic and thrilling music built around eclectic rhythms and melodies. Produced and written by Lindner and arranged by the trio, the album is a soundtrack to an earth analog, a planet with biological conditions similar to those on planet earth. “We imagine this album be the music the earth analog beings would have written or enjoyed,” says Lindner, an accomplished pianist and bandleader who found his voice on the Moog and analog synths while working with Lauryn Hill, Chick Corea and Meshell Ndegeocello (who produced Now vs Now’s debut album).
The Brooklyn born and bred Lindner “ranks among the finest all-around pianist/composers of his generation,” in the words of Time Out New York. Beginning his career in the late 80s, his arrangements reflect a love of hip-hop and Latin music. He picked up some serious momentum with The Jason Lindner Big Band which performed sold-out weekly shows at the NYC nightclub Smalls and has become known as a top-call collaborator as well as arranger.
Grammy-nominated Andreou has been performing professionally since the age of sixteen and has performed across the globe, with artists varying from acclaimed salsa band La Clave Secreta to numerous jazz greats. Tyson has become one of the top drummers in the New York scene, participating in the popular Revive DaLive concerts and other notable NYC shows.
Together in Now vs Now, these musicians bring to the stage a progressive, earthy and funky musical experience. As the New York Times aptly puts it, the band is “an outfit singularly devoted to delivering an immersive mind-body experience through heavy groove” and NPR Music extols the virtues of the group’s forging “into undeveloped musical terrain.”
