Omar Sosa Quarteto AfroCubano
Monday, July 21
Kuumbwa Jazz Center

Lauded pianist and composer, Omar Sosa, with six previous Grammy nominations to his credit, has established an international reputation for his exciting brand of Afro-Cuban jazz. His dedication to the roots of his music, blended with contemporary harmonic structures and infectious performances, have made Sosa an innovator among his contemporaries. His new group, AfroCubano, continues to explore the musical connections between the African and Cuban worlds. Rounded out by Cubans Ernesto Simpson on drums, Leandro Saint-Hill on saxophone and flute, and Mozambican Childo Thomas on bass, they are a true and aptly named embodiment of this musical tapestry.

Sosa began his musical journey by studying marimba at the age of eight, before moving to piano and enrolling at the Escuela Nacional de Musica in Havana.  After a short stay in Quito, Ecuador he then moved to San Francisco where he became deeply involved in the local Latin jazz scene, working with members of Tower of Power, Cuban saxophonist Yosvany Terry as well as Carlos “Patato” Valdes.  He started to gain recognition as a solo artist after 2011, when he the Jazz Album category at the 10th annual Independent Music Awards for his album Ceremony.

Known for referencing classical music in his compositions, Sosa presents a new, inspired take on the Afro-Cuban canon.  He describes his music as an expression of humanism and Santeria, all the while combining elements of straight-ahead jazz, North African percussion grooves, Latin big band and free piano improvisations.

Having performed across the United States, to Africa, to Europe and South America, his new group, Afrocubano, is a new twist on Sosa’s formidable sound.  His most recent albums are, Eggun (featuring the Afri-lectric Sextet), and Senses, a solo piano album. Look forward to Sosa presenting works from these albums combined with other favorites from the past few years, blended with the sound of Afrocubano.  As he puts it, “the pieces are musical journeys, during which my Cuban roots emerge in unusual, deconstructed ways.”
