“… the birth of a new cool.” – JazzTimes
Saxophonist Dayna Stephens has pursued an eclectic artistic path ranging from performances with Terence Blanchard and Gretchen Parlato to Carlos Santana and Stevie Wonder. A thoughtful player, Stephens favors melodic invention over flashy virtuosity and spareness over verbosity, and it shows in his compositions and arrangements. He leads an excellent group of top players with Bay Area roots: Remy Le Boeuf on alto saxophone; Pascal Le Boeuf on piano; Joe Sanders on bass; and Smith Dobson, Jr. on drums. That Nepenthetic Place is the name of his most recent album featuring the rising talent of Gretchen Parlato (vocals) and Ambrose Akinmusire (trumpet).
