“transcends time and form” – JazzTimes
It’s not everyday that a jazz record is inspired by a quilt, but the quilts of Gee’s Bend, Alabama are not ordinary quilts, and the album Transcendence by Jaimeo Brown is not an ordinary jazz album. On Transcendence, the 34-year-old drummer has created an amalgam of modern jazz, southern black spirituals and Indian music. Often based around recorded samples of the celebrated Gee’s Bend Quilters (who sing spirituals while they quilt), the songs are augmented by guitarist/producer Chris Sholar and saxophonist JD Allen, creating a striking musical tapestry.
